Dental Care

So today’s blog is about the Dental team manned by all Ethiopian dentists and hygienist: Wasihune, Ali, Bruktawita and a young sister who came to learn and help. This team of talented and devoted men and women spent long hours in the clinic offering dental exams to pre-k through 4th grade children. Any dental disease they discovered such as tooth decay of cavities was addressed the next day in the hospital setting. The most interesting case of the week was a oro-cutaneous fistula.  The local treatment for neck lymph adenopathy is to apply a hot coal to the neck. Non-healing wounds grow inward to the gum forming fistula tract. The unfortunate long term consequences require surgical fistulotomy . This young boy tolerated his procedure well and will have follow up this week. Ali and Wasi left mid week to head north into an even more rural setting to offer dental services.
